The Jacket Must Sit Perfectly on Your Shoulders
The shoulders are the foundation of your suit jacket. The seam should finish where your natural shoulder ends. The fabric should lie smoothly without sagging or pulling.
If the shoulders are too tight, you may notice dents or depressions near the sleeve head. If they are too wide, the jacket can droop and create an untidy appearance.
Avoid Gaps or Pulling Across the Chest
Your jacket chest should follow the natural shape of your body. When buttoned, the lapels should lie neatly against your chest.
A jacket that is too large may leave gaps around the chest, while one that is too small can create tension and pulling across the front.
The Trouser Seat Should Fit Comfortably
The seat of your trousers should follow your body without sagging or feeling excessively tight. Too much fabric creates a baggy appearance, while a tight seat restricts movement.
A properly fitted pair of trousers should feel comfortable whether you are standing, walking or sitting.
Pockets Should Not Pop Out
The side pockets of your trousers should lie naturally against your hips. If they flare or pull open, your trousers may be too tight around the seat or thighs.
Flat pockets create a much cleaner silhouette and make your trousers look polished from every angle.
Get the Jacket Sleeve Length Right
Your jacket sleeve should finish around your wrist bone, allowing a small amount of your shirt cuff to show.
A sleeve that covers your hand looks too long, while one that sits too high can make the entire outfit look unbalanced.
As a general guide, around ¼ to ½ inch of shirt cuff is a classic proportion.
